Earth Day Celebration – West Oakland

April 21, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Coming together with Research and Data: Presenting Information from Real Time Equipment

This workshop is sponsored by the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP), and will update residents of West Oakland with information from three air monitoring studies associated with a new Truck Management Program for West Oakland. The workshop will cover 100 x 100 air monitoring sensors placed throughout West Oakland; EDF/Google air mapping; and a study analyzing why filters on trucks are not working effectively at the Port of Oakland. The results of these studies will inform attendees of scientific findings about how black carbon — the main component of soot emitted from diesel engines, wood smoke, and other sources — varies throughout West Oakland.

During this workshop, participants will work together to determine how these data and our local knowledge can inform the City and the Port of Oakland to produce a truly comprehensive plan that minimizes air pollution in our neighborhoods. Here, we will set priorities and recommend ways to ensure that this plan is an opportunity to ensure that air pollution does not persist in the places that matter most: where we live, work, play, and pray. Join us in making an impact!
