SUMMARY:May 1st General Strike
DESCRIPTION:Shut It Down May 1st Poster \nThis May Day\, a broad-based coalition–Bay Resistance–has called for a General Strike to manifest the unity of our many communities in resisting the right-wing extremism that threatens to bring autocracy\, plutocracy\, kleptocracy\, and fascism for the benefit of the few. \nNo Coal in Oakland understands its fight for environmental justice and climate justice in opposition to the coal industry and its local collaborators is part of a larger struggle that has many fronts. \nThe same Trump Administration and its allies who are prepared to tear up environmental regulations to give the coal industry a greater opportunity to destroy living conditions on the planet is also launching many other attacks on our communities\, our country\, and our Constitution. \nBay Resistance’s call for a General Strike on May 1 states: \n“It’s time to RESIST. It is time to defend all people\, including workers\, immigrants\, Muslims\, Women\, LGBTQ people. It is time to defend our climate\, our schools\, and our unions. \n“This is a call to all working people\, to all communities: Join us in the streets in a general strike on May 1\, 2017! \n“Let us stand up together for a world where human rights and equality are respected. We are fighting for a world in which immigrant families are no longer torn apart\, in which every child gets a good public education\, every parent can access affordable childcare\, every family has quality healthcare\, every senior can retire in dignity\, and where working hard is enough to live out of poverty. \n“THE TIME HAS COME TO SHUT IT DOWN.” \nTo learn of specific actions planned for the East Bay\, San Francisco\, and the South Bay\, the best way to keep in touch is by signing up on the General Strike Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\nThe Bay Resistance Network is a network of over 50 organizations and unions.  Its Steering Committee includes: \nArab Resource and Organizing Center \nBay Rising (convenor) \nBlack Alliance for Just Immigration \nCausa Justa / Just Cause \nEast Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (convenor) \nGABRIELA USA \nJobs with Justice San Francisco (convenor) \nSan Francisco Rising (convenor) \nSEIU United Service Workers West \nSEIU Local 1021 \nSenior and Disability Action \nUnited Educators of San Francisco \nThe Bay Resistance Network includes these organizations who have pledged to build a stronger response to the threats before us.
