SUMMARY:Prod Gov. Brown to Oppose Oakland Coal Terminal
DESCRIPTION:Governor Jerry Brown is speaking at the “Clean Energy Ministerial“\, a “public-private action summit” of energy ministers and business executives from major energy-consuming countries. Brown presents himself as a climate leader\, but in addition to allowing fracking in California\, he has not spoken up to oppose Phil Tagami’s proposed coal export terminal in Oakland. \nJoin No Coal in Oakland and friends to prod Brown to speak out against the terminal and to remind the attendees of Brown’s real record! Coffee will be provided.

SUMMARY:City Council Open Forum\, June 7
DESCRIPTION:Please come out for a half hour on Tuesday June 7\, 2016 to remind the City Council that we want a ban on coal. New faces and new voices at this week’s Open Forum will go a long way to helping the council understand how broadly Oakland wants a ban on coal. You only have to speak for one minute\, and it’s at the beginning of the agenda: you can arrive at 5:30 and leave by 6:00. \nSign up for Open Forum in advance at\nhttp://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/CityClerk/s/SpeakerCard/SpeakerCard/OAK032373 \nFor Item\, enter “Open Forum” (or either word if it doesn’t accept both). Bring the confirmation number with you to the meeting. \nYou may already have your own “elevator speech” about coal based on your own experience. Please consider that it’s important to keep making the point that there is no way to mitigate the impact of coal dust on the West Oakland community or the impact of burning coal anywhere on our climate crisis everywhere. We need a ban\, not regulations. You can also advocate the proposed inclusion of crude oil\, fuel oils and gasoline in the ordinance — but please tell the council that these additional inclusions must not delay a coal ordinance!

SUMMARY:Ban Coal Rally
DESCRIPTION:On June 27\, the Oakland City Council will finally decide what to do about coal.   Will the City Council ban coal or will it sentence us to a 66-year-long compromise with the developer that would make Oakland the biggest coal exporting city on the West Coast?\n \nAlthough public opposition is great\, powerful forces are working behind the scenes to make the coal deal a reality.  Gov. Jerry Brown has remained silent while his friend and business partner Phil Tagami plots to ship millions of tons of coal through Oakland to be burned overseas.  It’s time for the greedy one percent to back off on this scheme that endangers the health and safety of Oaklanders and and would add to climate change throughout the world.  We can stop them but only if we let the City Council know that we will stand for nothing less than a ban on coal. \nJoin No Coal in Oakland on Saturday\, June 25\, for a large rally at City Hall starting at 1 p.m.\nPrint the flyer (PDF) and bring your neighbors.

SUMMARY:Rally and Council Vote on Coal
DESCRIPTION:The Oakland City Council’s long-awaited vote on coal may finally be coming at a special meeting set by the Council for Monday\, June 27. \nThe Oakland City Council has called the special session to “conclude and present information from the public hearing on the health and safety impacts of coal in Oakland and options for action\, including whether to adopt a prohibition on the storage\, loading\, import and export of coal in Oakland.” \nNo Coal in Oakland supporters will be present in large numbers to demand that the City Council pass a ban on coal that night.  We expect the Council to place no other items on the agenda.  This is the night that we demand our elected leaders say “No” to developer Phil Tagami.  They need to understand that the people of Oakland will not stand for anything less than a ban on coal. \nNo Coal will be holding a rally in Frank Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza before the meeting.  The special meeting will begin at 5 p.m. \nSAVE THE DATE!  DEMAND A BAN ON JUNE 27!\nPrint the flyer (PDF) and bring your neighbors.
